about

The ideas and themes that surround myth and fables have fueled my ambitions and studies throughout my early life, college, and adulthood. Literary pieces from classical Greek, Roman, Norse, Finnish, Chinese, Japanese, Early Christian, and Early Medieval Eras have inspired much of what the Fantasy genre is today. The early narrators of our collective human history relied on stories to emphasize morals, faults, consequences, passions, and a multitude of events that affects us, even today.

Arisen: a COTOW Chronicle attempts to emulate the ideals of a mythical fantasy. Years ago, I asked my son what kind of story he might like to read. His answer was “a journey story”. So, I began to shape, mold, destroy, and finally create ‘The Nations of Erst’ (or Erstland), Essil, the larger islands of Arch Frisk, and the Western Barrens. Along with these places, the different peoples, governments, religions, alliances, and enemies create metaphors and imitations of the pleasures and struggles we have in our reality today.

The journey of the Children of the Old Way is their introduction to each other, as well as, learning the greatness of their powers, while understanding the consequences of their actions.

I have lived and labored in countryside subdivisions, college towns, suburbs, city centers, even another country, while currently my wife, son, and I call Southwest Wisconsin and the Driftless Area home. The river valleys, hills, natural preserves, and wonderful small towns help inspire some of the themes, characters, and settings that I write.

about

Beauty and accessibility are key concerns in my practice, which also takes the form of graphic novels and other publishable formats: art that is available to the viewer on their own terms, outside the gallery setting, there to be glossed over or delved into, carried around, dinged up, worn out and loved. I am fascinated by the intersection of “high” and “mass” art, especially where it concerns stories and storytelling.

I am interested in the intersection, threshold, and convergence of ideas and genres; the moment, usually recognized in hindsight, when the tide shifted and a new expression of being emerged.

Where history collides with mythology, the psychic terrain with the physical landscape, the universal with the individual experience is where my practice sits. That, and I thrive on pop culture.

I might just be able to geek you under the table…

I originally hail from the suburbs of Philadelphia. In 2012 I moved to Scotland to pursue my Masters, and currently live in Dundee with my partner.
